Let me just say it: moving is emotional. You think it’s just boxes and bubble wrap until you're ugly-crying into a box of doughnuts over your couch — your trusty, butt-shaped, snack-stained couch — because it's not coming with you. And somehow, that hurts more than lifting your dresser down three flights of stairs in the Texas heat.
The final days before a move are a strange cocktail of nostalgia, exhaustion, and existential dread (“Why do I own six spatulas?”). But amid the mess, there are ways to make it bearable — maybe even…fun?
Here are five ways to survive and semi-thrive during your final days of moving:
1. Moving Day Music Party
Nothing powers you through packing and hauling like the perfect playlist. Create a high-energy moving day soundtrack filled with your favorite pump-up jams — think upbeat pop, classic rock, or energizing dance tunes. Blast it while you work (just be mindful of neighbors!) and let the music keep your momentum high and spirits even higher.
You can find my Spotify Playlist Here (feel free to add to it): https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1BAxnh1M6crvCqyC6ddVpW?si=0a862ceeb8c446b6
2. One Last Bite from Your Favorite Spot
Give yourself permission to get sentimental (and full) with one final feast from your go-to pizza place or that little taco stand with the neon sign that only half works. Don’t just eat — savor. This is your edible goodbye. And yes, you can cry into your favorite doughnuts or pizza like I did!
3. Finalize Your Escape Route (A.K.A. Travel Plans)
While you're elbow-deep in packing peanuts, don’t forget to nail down the logistics: What time are you leaving? Are you renting a truck, catching a flight, or bribing your cousin with gas money and snacks? Finalizing your travel plans early means fewer last-minute meltdowns and a smoother exit when it's finally time to say goodbye.
4. One Last Couch Sit
Before you carry it out (or mourn its dumpster fate), take one final sit on your couch. This couch has seen it all: midnight snacks, binge-watching marathons, the kids getting school work done or maybe even your last breakup. Take five, sink in, and say your goodbyes. It’s just a piece of furniture... but also a low-key therapist, dining table, and therapist again
5. Celebrate with a "New Keys" Toast
When the last box is loaded or you've taken your final step inside the new space, pop a small bottle of bubbly, crack open a favorite drink, or sip a fancy coffee. Make a toast — even if it’s just you — to fresh starts, big adventures, and everything waiting for you on the other side of the door.
