Having personally moved over a dozen times, I’ve discovered that preparing for a long distance move often begins with boxes and checklist- but somewhere between the pizza, closets and packing material, it becomes something a little bit more emotional.
As I sorted through years of accumulated possessions (ie decorations, paintings and clothes from the kids, etc…), I realized how much of what we owned no longer fit the life we were moving towards.
At first, deciding what to donate felt daunting. Each item held a story- an old jacket that was passed down to me by my grandfather (which no longer fits), kitchen gadgets we had since college, stacks of old books we read through twice. But as I began setting things aside for donation, the initial hesitation gave way to relief.
For anyone facing a similar dilemma, I used this simple “how-to” guide that can help make the process less overwhelming.
